Original period black-and-white real photograph showing Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser G-AKDM, construction number 12-3966.
This is a clearly identifiable individual aircraft built in 1947. British civil-register records show G-AKDM was registered to Broadway Transport Ltd on 23 September 1947. Its British registration was cancelled on 27 October 1950, giving a particularly tight date range for this photograph.
Date of photograph: c.1947–1950.
The registration G-AKDM is clearly visible on the aircraft, so the exact airframe can be traced.
After leaving Britain, this same Piper had a remarkably international career. Construction number 12-3966 subsequently carried ZS-DFI in South Africa, then VP-KJA in Kenya, before later becoming OO-CMC / 9O-CMC / 9Q-CMC in the Congo. Kenyan register material records VP-KJA as ex G-AKDM and ZS-DFI, registered there in September 1951.
The PA-12 Super Cruiser was Piper’s three-seat post-war touring aircraft, produced between 1946 and 1948. G-AKDM therefore represents one of the type’s early British-operated examples.
