Original 1938 Northrop 8A-2 Attack Bomber
Factory Photo Armed for Argentina 8x10
Bombs Hung, Pilot Aboard — Factory Print, Jan. 28, 1938DESCRIPTIONThis original black and white factory photograph shows a Northrop 8A-2 attack bomber from the right front, with its bombs installed on the racks beneath the wing. The caption lettered into the print reads 3390, NORTHROP, 8A-2, 1-28-38, RIGHT FRONT-BOMBS INSTALLED. A pilot in a flight helmet sits in the cockpit behind the radial engine, with a gun barrel above the cowling and the faired landing gear below. Images were scanned at 600dpi, so the rivet lines and bomb shackles show clearly in the listing photos. The 8A-2 was the Argentine version of the Northrop Model 8, the attack bomber family that served the U.S. Army Air Corps as the A-17. Argentina bought 30 in 1937, after Northrop Gamma demonstrators were shown in Buenos Aires, and knew the type as the N-8-A2. It was a two-seat, fixed-gear monoplane powered by a Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial. The Model 8 export family also went to Sweden, the Netherlands, Peru, Iraq and Norway. This frame was made at the factory on January 28, 1938, ahead of the type\'s arrival in Argentina later that year. In service the aircraft flew from El Palomar near Buenos Aires and El Plumerillo near Mendoza. The 8A-2 held the front line until the Argentine-designed I.Ae. 24 Calquin took over the attack role, and the survivors then served as trainers and reconnaissance aircraft into the mid-1950s.Every effort is made for fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. The image is sharp with a good tonal range and clear caption lettering. The surface shows a few light dust specks and tiny dark flecks, and the white border has a small amber spot and faint gray smudges along the right edge. The reverse is toned amber from album adhesive residue, with small patches of cream paper fiber where the print was removed from a period album page. No tears, creases or cracks in the image area. Scanned at 600dpi, and the listing photos show the actual print.
