Al Capone was an American gangster who led the Chicago Outfit and dominated organized crime in Illinois during the Prohibition era from 1921 to 1931. Capone came to Chicago in 1921 to manage the Four Deuces Club, casino, and bordello. During the 1924 municipal elections, Capone turned the town of Cicero into a war zone: He bullied voters, kidnapped pollsters, and threatened news reporters into voting for the people who supported his criminal behavior. He was associated with violent underworld conflicts, including the 1929 St. Valentine\'s Day Massacre. He maintained a flamboyant public profile, occasionally presenting himself as a charitable benefactor during the Great Depression. He owned a 1928 Cadillac V8 and it painted to blend in with police cars at the time. It even had a siren and searchlight mounted on the roof with holes at the bottom of the window for rifles barrels to slip through in order to shoot from the sides of the car.
He didn\'t only stay in Chi town but visited Havana, Illinois when the river town was nicknamed \"Little Reno\" for its bustling underground gambling and nightlife. The \"Little Reno\" Era of the 1920s and 1930s, featured numerous clubs, floating riverboats, and local establishments offering card games, bootleg whiskey, and entertainment. Al Capone and his associates would visit local clubs, hunting, and fishing along the Illinois River. Havana\'s wide-open gambling may have been connected to the Chicago syndicate operations. The era famously came to an end following coordinated federal, state, and local police raids on Halloween night that shut down the city\'s widespread illegal gambling enterprises.
Capone was convicted of federal income tax evasion in 1931 and sentenced to 11 years in prison. He served time in federal penitentiaries, including Alcatraz, before his release in 1939 due to declining health from advanced syphilis. He died in Florida in 1947 and was later reburied at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.
