Rare and very desirable Bound Volume of 52 Issues of Harper’s Weekly for the year 1866 in outstanding, original condition. This fantastic volume of perhaps the most important 19th century illustrated magazine published in the United States includes a number of important full page plates by famous American Artists depicting important Post-Civil War events.
This volume measures approx. 11 1/2” x 16” and 1 7/8” thick. It is Volume No. X and contains all 52 issues for the year - each issue is complete with no pages missing, clipped or significantly damaged.
The volume is bound in the publishers 1/4 leather and cloth boards which are intact and still quite attractive but exhibit some wear. The spine has been professionally rebacked as can be seen in the scans below. The internal issues are complete and tight - there are no pages loose, miss folded, torn or seriously damaged in any way. The pages and plates are generally clean and bright with no significant soiling, foxing or staining. There are a few, small edge tears which are commonly caused by thumbing of the pages of these massive volumes - in the few cases where these tears are present they occur in the center of the right hand margin and affect the margin only. Overall the interior pages are clean and crisp and very well preserved.
This fantastic, Post Civil War year of Harper’s Weekly contains much about Southern Reconstruction and Politics and happenings within the former Confederate States but also includes reports and illustrations of all sorts of important American news and events. Everything imaginable can be found in these pages including much on the racial riots in the southern states specifically in New Orleans, Charleston and Memphis; many illustrations and stories about the Freed Black Slaves and Black Soldiers including schools, Freedman's Bureaus, public welfare, etc.; illustrated articles on the western territories and states including Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Tennessee, etc; the Laying of the Atlantic Cable by Samuel F.B. Morse; maps and descriptions of many of the former Confederate States; the death of General Winfield Scot; the Rebellion in Ireland; Denver Colorado and the gold houses there, etc., etc. Key illustrations include a fantastic portrait of the Athletics and Atlantics Baseball Teams which played fro the National Championship (we believe that this was the first major baseball image printed in an American Newspaper); a fantastic cover illustration depiction Wall Street; Sporting images including Billiards, Horse Racing, Rowing, Cock Fighting, Croquet, etc.; plates of Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln; many plates related to Blacks in American Society; plates of major fires in Portland, Maine and Cincinnati, Ohio; Indian Attacks and Indian chiefs; Black Soldiers; a Giant Elephant landing in New York; etc., etc., etc.
Harper’s Weekly is one of the most important, original sources of historical information and cultural insights into life in 19th century America that can be found and its treatment of the Civil War and post Civil War years is considered by many to be the most complete, contemporary record of events and policies published in the United States. When offered for sale this volume is priced in the $1500 - $2000 range (if you can find a complete volume).
