POUGHKEEPSIE New York
The Eastman Business College Bank
25¢ Circa 1865–1870
~ 3 3/4 X 1 7/8 inches
Founded in 1859, Eastman Business College quickly became one of the nation’s premier commercial schools, drawing students from across the United States to its bustling Poughkeepsie campus. To replicate real banking environments, the college operated its own “Eastman College Bank,” issuing fractional‑denomination notes like this 25¢ example for use in classroom exercises. Students handled these notes daily while practicing bookkeeping, deposits, and counterfeit detection—skills essential to post‑Civil War commerce. Because they circulated only within the school’s simulated economy, most were heavily worn or discarded, leaving comparatively few survivors today. Their distinctive designs, modeled after contemporary U.S. fractional currency, make them appealing crossover pieces for collectors of obsolete notes, educational ephemera, and 19th‑century Americana.
