Vintage NOS Estwing E239M International German Pattern Latthammer – Gray Factory Finish – Leather Grip – USA
Offered from a family estate is an unused vintage Estwing E239M German Pattern Latthammer / Roofing Hammer, forged in one piece from steel and manufactured by Estwing in Rockford, Illinois, USA.
This is one of Estwing's International-pattern hammers, featuring the distinctive German Latthammer configuration. According to family history, this example may have been purchased in Western Australia, which would be consistent with its international-market design.
Unusual Original Gray Factory Finish
One of the most distinctive features of this older example is its original gray painted factory finish, rather than the polished-steel appearance commonly seen on current-production E239M hammers.
The finish is believed to be completely original and has not been repainted, polished or restored. It shows numerous scratches, scuffs, chips and areas of finish loss acquired during decades of storage and handling.
The hammer also retains its original Estwing Leather Grip Tools paper hang tag, an especially nice feature for a vintage unused example.
Unused Working Surfaces
Although the painted finish shows considerable storage wear, the actual working surfaces tell a very different story.
The milled/waffle striking face remains exceptionally crisp and sharp, with the individual teeth retaining their original geometry and showing no visible flattening or mushrooming from striking.
The German-pattern pointed pick likewise shows no visible working wear.
The traditional stacked-leather washer grip remains tight and exceptionally well preserved, retaining its classic Estwing appearance.
Mechanical Nail Holder / Starter
This is the milled-face, non-magnetic configuration. The hammer incorporates a clever mechanical nail holder/starter in the head.
A nail is positioned with its head captured in the recessed pocket and its shaft supported by the adjoining channel, allowing it to be positioned for one-handed starting without a magnet.
One of the listing photographs shows a nail positioned in the holder to demonstrate how this feature works. Nail is shown for demonstration only and is not Estwing

This is an unused vintage tool, not a cosmetically perfect tool.
The original gray finish has scratches, scuffs, chips and areas of paint loss from long-term storage. These marks are shown clearly in the photographs and should not be confused with evidence of working use.
Of particular note are the sharp, unworn milled striking face, unworn pick and excellent leather grip.
No attempt has been made to clean aggressively, repaint, polish or otherwise restore the hammer. It is being offered in the condition in which it was preserved.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
An unusual opportunity for an Estwing collector, vintage American tool collector, or collector of international-pattern professional hammers, particularly with the original hang tag still attached.
Will be carefully packed to protect the leather grip, original finish and paper hang tag during shipment.
