Neal White (1947–2024) — Medical Patient with Tubing — Vintage Signed Gelatin Silver Photograph, 1974–75
An arresting vintage black-and-white gelatin silver photograph by American photographer Neal White (1947–2024), signed and dated on its original rust-colored presentation mount.
The photograph presents a close-up view of a remarkably lifelike face, possibly that of a mannequin or theatrical model, surrounded by what appears to be medical equipment. The eyes are closed, while tubes extend toward the nose and into the open mouth. Additional equipment and corrugated hoses occupy the upper portion of the composition.
The image is both documentary and visually unsettling. The peaceful expression contrasts with the mechanical complexity of the surrounding apparatus, creating a composition that moves beyond straightforward clinical documentation.
The close framing, dramatic tonal contrasts, and unusual viewpoint lend the photograph an almost surreal quality, characteristic of the visual experimentation found in White's work during this period.

Signed and dated in pencil at the lower right, immediately beneath the the personal archive of Neal White, photographer and longtime professor of photography at San Francisco State condition. The photograph remains attached to its original rust-colored presentation board. The mount shows minor handling and age-related wear. The reverse has scattered marks and discoloration, together with strips of aged adhesive tape along the edges, apparently associated with an earlier mounting or display arrangement.
There are no inscriptions on the reverse.
