Dated 1964 and marked as originating from the President of Mary Barron College’s office, this rare pair of cast iron bookends depicts the historic canine mascots of the college. Created by Virginia Metal Crafters, they also fit together to form a single dog, if you prefer to display them on a table. 6.5” wide x 7.5” tall. Painted in a subtle green patina to give the look of tarnished copper.Ham and Jam were real campus dogs that lived at Mary Baldwin in the late 19th century (appearing on campus prior to 1880). The beloved dogs became long-standing symbols of campus life, inspiring not only the mid-century bookends but also the title of the college’s 1977 alumni cookbook, “From Ham to Jam”.Statues of the dogs sit directly in front of the Administration Building. These bookends were purchased from the college during its troubled years prior to its new coed status. A pair of these iron bookends apparently sold on last year for just under $300. A rare, fun, and functional piece of Mary Baldwin College history.
