MAJOR GENERAL JACOB MORTON (1761-1836) was an American military officer, lawyer and businessman. He was the marshal for the First inauguration of George Washington. When no bible was available, Mortan retrieved the Lodge Bible from St. John’s Lodge where he was the Worshipful Master. In 1800, he was a Federalist candidate in New York’s 2nd congressional district, narrowly losing by fewer than 100 votes. He led the New York Militia during the War of 1812.
One-page, LS from Morton to Peter Van Schaack, Dec. 11, 1790, New York.
“Mr. Smith informs me that a Demand of the Partnership of Sears & Smith against Platt & Betts was put into your hands a considerable time ago. I would be much obliged to you to inform me whether any money has been paid on it by Platt & Betts and what prospect there is of its being discharged...”
Van Schaak (1747-1832) was a well-respected colonial lawyer. He was accused of being a loyalist during the Revolution, a charge he denied.
