Rau of Philadelphia, Strauss thanks her for writing to him after "the recent vote in the Senate," a reference to the Senate's rejection of his nomination as Secretary of Commerce earlier that month. He writes of "the good conscience of knowing that I have done the best I could according to my lights to serve our country," and of his gratitude that friends approve.Strauss was a former Rear Admiral and chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. His Commerce nomination was rejected by the Senate in June 1959, making this a personal reflection written within days of a major political moment.CONDITION: Light toning, a central horizontal fold, a brownish ring mark on the right edge, and a few small spots near the lower right.
