Description
Beautiful vintage Japanese traditional kokeshi doll, hand-turned from wood and hand painted with floral decoration.
The base is signed by the maker and dated 10/28/1980. The signature appears to identify the craftsman as Okuyama Kuraji (奥山庫治), a maker associated with the Hijiori tradition of kokeshi from Yamagata, Japan.
The doll has a wonderfully aged appearance, with warm natural wood tones, red and black hand-painted details, and an unusually large, striking form. The head is removable in the traditional construction.
