About the item:
From the collection ofJohn Workman (Art Director from 1977 to 1984), this approximately 13 1/2 by 17 inch progressive press proof (made up of four acetate sheets of four separate colors that align to reveal how the image will actually appear) is the original proof for the cover to Heavy Metal Magazine from August, 1980. Artwork by James Cherry. It is in excellent condition overall with some minor storage wear. It will be shipped with the utmost care.It is signed by hand on its reverse side by Workman.Please note- the signature is real. It is the actual, hand-signed signature of Workman. It is not a pre-printed image. Please note- it is slightly larger than my scanner but it gets most of the proof. It has general age/storage wear but is still nice and displays well (please note, though scanned to show the proof open, it is folded down the center just like the cover itself would be on an actual magazine.
About Progressive Press Proofs:
Before the advent of computers, the coloring in magazines, newspapers, comic books etc., regardless of however many colors appeared to the eye, were made up of tiny dots in only four colors - yellow, blue (cyan), red (magenta) and black. Combined with the white of the paper and the way the human brain perceives the image, a wide variety of colors appear. The color separation (or color proof) was created to show what the actual, printed version of the image would ultimately look like (so, if any corrections were required, they would be caught before the publication went to press). In the process, each of the four colors are printed onto their own individual acetate sheet and are then lined up, one atop of the other, precisely and affixed to a white sheet of paper. When this is accomplished, the full color version of the image appears.
