That signature completely shifts the story. Rather than being European, this is actually a vintage Japanese studio pottery plate.
The signature is written in a stylized, vertical hand-painted script that reads 寿峰 (Jūhō).
About the Maker & Style or 青峰 (Seihou or Seihō
• The Mark: 寿峰 (Jūhō) can translate to "Abundant Peak" or "Long-life Peak." It is a traditional art name used by Japanese master potters, often associated with historic ceramic-producing regions like Kutani (in Ishikawa Prefecture) or Arita (in Saga Prefecture).
• The Aesthetic: The plate is executed in a rustic, textured style known as Mingan (folk craft) or Zōgan (inlay/relief work). This explanation makes perfect sense of the heavy, textured clay body and the deep, rich black and iron-teal glazes.
• The Subject Matter: In postwar Japan, steam locomotives (particularly the iconic D51 and C62 classes) became heavily romanticized symbols of Nostalgia (Shōwa retro). Studio artisans frequently captured these detailed steam trains on everyday stoneware plates and plaques during the 1960s to 1980s.
It is a fantastic crossover piece combining traditional Japanese studio craft with vintage railroad .
