Antique real photo postcard depicting the Huntington County Courthouse in downtown Huntington, Indiana.
The photograph presents an impressive street-level view of the monumental Neoclassical courthouse, including its prominent central dome, classical columns, arched entrances, pediments, clock faces, landscaped grounds and surrounding downtown buildings. Utility poles, an unpaved or early paved street and portions of neighboring commercial architecture are also visible.
The Huntington County Courthouse was constructed during the early 1900s and completed around 1906. Designed by noted courthouse architect John W. Gaddis, the building remains one of Huntington’s most recognizable architectural landmarks and is part of the Huntington Courthouse Square Historic District.
The photographic image closely matches other identified historic views of the Huntington County Courthouse. The postcard is not captioned with a location, making the architectural identification especially important for collectors and local historians.
The divided back has a distinctive CYKO photographic-paper stamp box. CYKO paper was commonly used for real photo postcards during the early decades of the twentieth century. Based on the photographic paper, architecture and street scene, this card likely dates from approximately the 1900s to 1910s.
The postcard was never mailed and has no address, message, postage stamp or postmark.
An appealing early image for collectors of Huntington, Indiana history, county courthouses, government buildings, Indiana architecture, downtown streetscapes and real photo postcards.
CONDITION
Fair antique condition with considerable age and handling wear. The front has surface scratches, scuffs, spotting, silvering or emulsion deterioration, discoloration and general age toning. A dark vertical band appears along the left side of the photograph, likely resulting from the original photographic development or exposure. There is a handwritten notation along the lower margin. The corners and edges show wear, rubbing and slight softening.
The reverse has age toning, scattered spotting, light soiling and faint pencil or erased writing. The card is unused and unposted, with no stamp or postal cancellation. Despite the wear, the courthouse remains clearly visible and identifiable, with strong architectural detail. Please examine both scans carefully for the complete condition.
