Here is a striking vintage patriotic award badge presented in a period Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation 4-H Canning award box.
The badge features a bold red, white and blue enamel star, a central field of thirteen gold stars and an elaborate border of American eagles. Its magnetic backing allows it to be displayed without poking holes in clothing—because apparently looking accomplished shouldn’t require sacrificing a perfectly good shirt.
The original-style presentation box is marked “CANNING — KERR GLASS MFG. CORP.” and displays the 4-H clover alongside a canning jar and cornucopia. Inside, it reads:
“Our congratulations and best wishes go with this award.”
The box lists Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation at 3440 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles 5, California. The numbered postal-zone address places it within the approximately 1943–1963 period, before five-digit ZIP Codes became standard. Its styling suggests a likely 1950s date.
Kerr Glass was a longtime sponsor of competitive 4-H canning programs, providing recognition for young people who demonstrated outstanding skill in food preservation. Back then, canning was serious business: ribbons were earned, jars were sealed and nobody trusted a suspiciously raised lid.
The badge appears to have been preserved with this presentation box for many years and is offered as found. Because the badge itself carries no visible Kerr, 4-H or award-level markings, its original association with the box cannot be independently verified.
