The calcite often forms scalenohedral crystals, which are elongated, triangular-based shapes that resemble a double-ended spear or elongated pyramid. This form is sometimes referred to as \"dogtooth spar\" because of its resemblance to canine teeth.

Hematite, an iron oxide mineral, often appears as a metallic black or deep reddish-brown coating on the calcite. It may also occur as small, tabular or platy crystals on the calcite surface.
