Exceptional late-19th-century Gorham & Co. E40 coffee pot dating to approximately 1880–1890. This striking mixed-metal piece features a beautifully hammered copper body with a tall slender neck, dramatically curved gooseneck spout, arched handle, hinged domed lid, and ornate applied decorative collar.
The dark-toned collar is detailed with raised floral and foliate motifs, creating an elegant contrast against the warm hammered copper surface. Additional contrasting metal fittings accent the handle and reinforce the sophisticated mixed-metal construction associated with Gorham’s artistic work of the period.
The underside is clearly marked with the Gorham anchor trademark, GORHAM CO, and E40 designation with a “P” underneath linking it to the year 1883. The overall form reflects the late-Victorian Aesthetic Movement and Japonisme influence that became prominent in decorative arts during this era.
With its sculptural silhouette, rich aged surface, and unmistakably high-end antique presentation, this is an impressive display piece for collectors of Gorham, American decorative arts, Victorian metalwork, or 19th-century mixed-metal objects.

Condition
Antique condition with substantial age-related patina and surface character consistent with a late-19th-century piece.
The hammered copper displays a rich brown tone with darker areas, natural oxidation, tarnish, and tonal variation throughout. Green verdigris is present in several areas, including around portions of the lid opening, spout, seams, handle fittings, and underside. Some of the green surface oxidation can be gently rubbed away, but the piece has not been aggressively polished, preserving its aged appearance.
The handle shows visible tarnish and darker oxidation in areas. The decorative neck band has developed a deep patina that highlights the raised floral detailing. The underside shows scratches, discoloration, oxidation, and naturally developed copper toning from age and handling.
There are scattered surface marks, light abrasions, and areas of wear throughout, all consistent with antique use and age. The hinged lid remains attached, and the spout, handle, body, and decorative elements appear intact from visual inspection.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they provide the best representation of the overall condition, patina, oxidation, markings, and surface details.
This is a truly distinctive piece of late-19th-century American decorative metalwork. The combination of Gorham craftsmanship, hammered copper, mixed-metal detailing, sculptural proportions, and naturally aged patina gives it exceptional character and presence.
Its dramatic gooseneck spout, ornate floral collar, and elongated silhouette make it as much a work of art as a functional antique vessel. Whether displayed in a collection of Gorham, Victorian decorative arts, Aesthetic Movement pieces, or fine antique metalware, it has the kind of visual impact that immediately draws attention.
