A masterpiece of Dutch Golden Age portraiture depicting an elderly woman absorbed in reading a large book, rendered with remarkable attention to detail and subtle lighting. The subject wears a linen headdress and fur-lined clothing, captured in profile as she concentrates intently on her text. This iconic work exemplifies Gerrit Dou's skill in intimate domestic scenes and represents a significant moment in the history of depicting literacy and intellectual engagement in 17th-century art.
