There is no subtle sales pitch happening here, and frankly there did not need to be. Put one of the most recognizable faces and hairstyles of the 1970s in the center, add a beauty-product logo underneath, and let several million people wonder whether their own bathroom contained enough hairspray to attempt the transformation. The large format gives the portrait genuine presence, while the typography and simple white field have the unmistakable look of professional salon advertising rather than a later decorative print. Its wear is substantial enough that nobody will mistake it for something recently pulled from a printer, but that battered commercial history is also part of the appeal. For a salon, barbershop, beauty-school, pop-culture, or advertising collection, it has exactly the sort of visual punch that modern reproductions try very hard to manufacture.
Farrah Fawcett became a cultural phenomenon during the 1970s, with her television fame accompanied by an equally influential beauty image that extended far beyond the screen. Her famously feathered hair was copied throughout the decade and helped turn photographs of her into instantly recognizable pieces of American popular culture. Hair-care companies naturally understood the value of connecting themselves to that image, making surviving salon and retail promotional material an interesting intersection of celebrity memorabilia and beauty-industry history. Unlike magazine advertisements that were produced by the millions and intended to disappear with the next issue, freestanding commercial displays had a much harder working life and were routinely discarded when campaigns ended. Finding one decades later with its easel back still present offers a tangible piece of the era when a celebrity hairstyle could practically become a national renovation project.
