Ernie Mackel Six Animal Directional Zuni Fetish
From Zuni Native American carver Ernie Mackel comes this beautiful six animal directional Zuni fetish. The base animal, a mountain lion, protector of the north, is carved from a gorgeous piece of leopard rock. It is finished with inlaid turquoise eyes. Five of the six animals of the directional are tiny representations, each beautifully carved out of its proper color stone. The eagle, out of abalone, is the protector of the sky. The mole, protector of the underground, is carved from black jet; the bear, protector of the west, is out of blue turquoise. The badger, carved out of red shell, is the protector of the south. The wolf is the protector of the east and is carved from white mother-of-pearl. These five are held to the main base animal with a string of coral and heishi beads with a turquoise nugget on sinew. Each tiny fetish has inlaid eyes of either turquoise or black jet. The badger sits at the top on the back of the mountain lion, the base animal, on a large arrowhead with scalloped edges, carved from red shell. This is an incredible fetish and would make a great addition to any collection or a wonderfully unique gift!
