English Pewter Armorial Charger John Shorey 1673 Touchmarks Heraldic 13.5”:

Museum Quality 17th-Century English Pewter Armorial Charger – John Shorey, London (c. 1673-1690)

For your consideration is an exceptional and highly rare example of Restoration-era English pewter. This 13.5-inch charger x 2”d features remarkable relief-cast decoration, a heraldic central crest, and clear, documented touchmarks from one of London's most celebrated 17th-century masters.

Key Features & Provenance:

• Authenticated Touchmarks: The reverse bears the large touchmark of John Shorey (Elder), featuring a crown over a bird with the date 1673 (the year of his admission to the Freedom of the Company of Pewterers).

• Quality Hallmarks: Includes a secondary set of hallmarks, including the Lion Rampant and Rose and Crown, certifying this as high-standard London-cast pewter.

• Rare Decorative Motif: Unlike standard plain-rim chargers, this piece features a multi-part relief casting on the rim, depicting repeating Swords and Targets (Shields). This military/martial theme suggests a commission for a high-ranking officer or a London Livery Company.

• Central Armorial Crest: The center is adorned with a "Dexter Arm in Armour Embowed holding a Falchion (Curved Sword)" on a twisted torse, surrounded by delicate "wigglework" (tremulo) engraving typical of the 1670–1690 period.

Condition Report:

This piece is in superb antique condition for its age (350+ years). It retains a beautiful, bright luster with a healthy patina. The casting remains crisp. No significant warping or "pewter rot." As expected with genuine 17th-century utility items, there are minor surface scratches and small pitting consistent with age and historical use.

Why This Piece?

Large 13.5" chargers from the late 1600s are increasingly difficult to find, especially those with specialized relief-cast rims. This is not just a plate; it is a significant artifact of English Baroque metalwork, perfect for the serious collector of Early English Pewter or Heraldica.
