For your consideration is an Emile Galle (Émile Gallé) lion-shaped candle holder (candlestick/torchére). The candle holder dates to the beginning of Gallé's mature work in faience (that is, tin-glazed earthenware). While the form seems to derive from similar lion-form earthenware of the French Renaissance, the decoration references the then-popular Japanese imari wares. Gallé himself referred to this pattern as "imari." This particular version of Gallé's design appears to be very rare (an sale result for the more common variation is included in the listing). The piece was purchased from a reputable sale house.
Condition: The piece has areas of visible restoration to the tail and the front paw. There are also a few small chips. The piece presents well. Please see the images for more details.
