From the Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) perspective, Khe Sanh in 1972 during the Easter Offensive was a critical military objective aimed at challenging American and South Vietnamese defenses in the region.
During the Easter Offensive of 1972, the NVA aimed to test the resolve of South Vietnamese and American forces and make strategic gains in South Vietnam.
Khe Sanh, located near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Quảng Trị Province, was strategically important due to its proximity to North Vietnam and its role as a potential launching point for further advances into South Vietnam.
Khe Sanh represented a key position near the DMZ, allowing the NVA to threaten and potentially disrupt allied supply lines and military operations in the region. Its capture would have provided the NVA with a significant propaganda victory and strategic foothold in the area.
The NVA's objective was to surround and besiege Khe Sanh, as they did during the earlier Siege of Khe Sanh in 1968, and pressure U.S (Advisors, Special Forces and CIA Operatives only remained) and South Vietnamese forces to divert resources to its defense following its previous abandonment in July 1971.
By engaging in prolonged battles and heavy artillery bombardments, the NVA sought to wear down allied defenses and capture the base.
The NVA deployed infantry units supported by artillery and anti-aircraft defenses to encircle Khe Sanh and cut off its supply routes. They aimed to exploit terrain and weather conditions to their advantage, making it difficult for allied forces to reinforce or resupply the base.
