Early 19th century linen and wool work Scottish sampler by Augusta Jane Steele - 1832. This sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with six rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern, whilst the middle section contains Augusta Jane\'s name, that of her place of residence - Closeburn Village - and the date of October 26th 1832. There is a central tree below with a bird on a tree stump to either side followed by a tree flanked by a dog with a floral motif by the tree of the right. The names William Steele, Grace Steele, James Steele and Samuel Steele run across the linen beneath with a small example of zigzag border to the right. The lower section of the linen is stitched centrally with a charming image of a bee skep on a table with its occupants buzzing around the skep which then has a tulip urn and flower basket to each side. There is an impressive single storey house below the skep with a rosebush to its left and right, then the top and bottom edges of the linen are stitched with a floral border.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a small area of faint staining to the upper left corner. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is a small amount of stitch loss to the triangulated long stitch border below Augusta Jane\'s details etc plus a small amount of stitch loss to the red line border above the Steele family names. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century bronzed frame which is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff markcommensurate with its age and intentional distressing.
Measures 10 3/4\" x 16\" (sight size) and 12 1/2\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL continuing to work on!!)
