Up for sale is a fascinating, authentic Civil War dug iron entrenching shovel blade relic. This piece has incredible, old-line collection provenance, explicitly documented on its two attached vintage collector tags.
According to the handwritten records accompanying the piece, this spade was recovered from a Confederate South Carolina Infantry Winter Encampment located just south of Fredericksburg, Virginia. This ties the tool directly to the Army of Northern Virginia’s historic winter quarters during the grueling winter of 1862–1863, following the Battle of Fredericksburg.
The tags also note its display pedigree, indicating it was part of the prominent Fredericksburg Civil War Show in 1983 (with an earlier catalog date of 3-26-83).
