Lydia S English, an ardent secessionist founded and operated Miss English\'s Female Seminary, aka Waverley Seminary in Georgetown,DC for over 30 years, until 1861 when Federal authorities confiscated the school and converted it into a Union Army hospital. The poet Walt Whitman served as a nurse there and It is believed that Doctor Mary Walker, the first woman to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor also served here. After the War the school re-opened as Waverley Hospital.
