AI Description:

A bowtie axe (often called a Guilford axe or Bolen axe) is a flaked stone tool used by Indigenous peoples in North America. These ancient, double-bitted artifacts feature a flared, hourglass shape and were typically used for heavy-duty wood-chopping or breaking down game.

Key Details

· Era & Origin: Most commonly found in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, dating primarily from the Archaic period.

· Material: They are usually made via flintknapping (chipped stone) rather than pecking or grinding, and are often crafted from locally available chert, rhyolite, or meta-volcanic slate.

· Usage: The narrow center (the \"waist\") was designed to be hafted tightly into a split wooden handle and secured with animal sinew.

Archaeological Significance

Unlike large, ground-stone grooved axes, these flaked tools were purely utilitarian, which often makes them prized for their patina and the visible craftsmanship left by early toolmakers
