Beautiful Piece from the worlds most Famous Barite Mining District The Old Leadbelt of Missouri, this Specimen hails from Blackwell Missouri
- Transition to barite: After lead production began to cease in the mid-1900s, the focus shifted to barite mining. Barite was often found in the same deposits as lead and was initially recovered by hand from the same surficial areas that had been mined for lead.
- Barite boom: A major boom in barite mining occurred in 1926 when it was discovered that barite was essential for drilling mud in the oil industry. Washington County, once a world leader in lead, became a leading producer of barite.
- End of mining: Barite production declined in the 1980s, and the major lead mining operations in the Old Lead Belt closed by the mid-1970s, with the last one shutting down in 1972
