Antique RED RAVEN Liver Pills Bottle Sealed Contents Brunswig Drug Co Los Angeles CA

Overview

A fantastic and unusually complete early patent medicine survivor from turn-of-the-century Los Angeles. This miniature clear glass bottle still retains its original cork, original paper labels, and original black liver pills sealed inside — something rarely seen intact after well over a century.

The bright salmon-red labels advertise “RED RAVEN LIVER PILLS” and boldly state “Ask Anybody,” a classic example of aggressive early American patent medicine marketing from an era when cure-all remedies filled drug store shelves coast to coast.

Made by the Brunswig Drug Co. of Los Angeles, California, this little bottle captures an incredible crossroads in American history: the fading Wild West, the rise of modern medicine, booming California expansion, and the last great era before federal pharmaceutical regulation transformed the industry forever.

At only about 3" tall, it has enormous display presence thanks to the vivid graphics, untouched contents, and wonderfully preserved cork stopper.

Approximate Date

Circa 1903–1910.

The typography, lithographed paper label style, cork closure, square machine-made bottle form, and pricing strongly point to the late Victorian / early Edwardian patent medicine era.

The “25 cents” price point was common for over-the-counter laxative and liver remedies during the first decade of the 1900s.

MakerBrunswig Drug Company

Brunswig Drug Company

Founded in Los Angeles in the late 19th century, Brunswig Drug Co. became one of the major pharmaceutical wholesalers and medical supply firms serving the rapidly growing American West.

During this era, Los Angeles was exploding from dusty railroad town into a booming modern city. Companies like Brunswig supplied pharmacies, doctors, hospitals, mining towns, ranch communities, and frontier settlements throughout California and beyond.

Eventually, the company evolved into one of the major western pharmaceutical distribution operations of the 20th century.

About “Liver Pills”

“Liver pills” were among the most common remedies sold in America from the 1800s into the early 1900s. The term usually referred to laxative or digestive pills believed to “stimulate the liver,” cleanse the body, improve complexion, reduce headaches, and restore vitality.

Many contained combinations of ingredients such as:

  • Aloes
  • Podophyllum (mayapple root)
  • Cascara sagrada
  • Senna
  • Belladonna
  • Charcoal
  • Various herbal compounds

Some formulas worked mainly as stimulant laxatives. Others wandered into the wonderfully questionable territory of “medical optimism.”

The directions here still survive on the side label:

  • “As a purgative 3 pills at bedtime”
  • “As a laxative 2 pills at bedtime”
  • “As an aperient 1 pill at bedtime”

That escalating dosage ladder is peak 1900 pharmacy energy. “Feeling sluggish? Simply increase raven intensity.”

Life During This Era

This bottle comes from a remarkable transitional moment in American history.

Medicine

Medicine was only beginning to become scientifically regulated. Many remedies were sold directly to the public with extravagant claims and little oversight. The Pure Food and Drug Act would not arrive until 1906, and even afterward enforcement remained limited for years.

Doctors still made house calls. Antibiotics did not yet exist. Germ theory was becoming accepted, but many households still relied heavily on patent medicines, tonics, bitters, and pills like these.

Technology

The world was rapidly modernizing:

  • Electric lights were spreading through cities
  • Telephones were becoming common
  • Automobiles were replacing horses
  • Motion pictures were brand new
  • Airplanes had just appeared
  • Railroads dominated long-distance travel

Los Angeles itself was transforming from a regional western city into a major economic powerhouse.

Politics & Culture

This was the age of:

  • Theodore Roosevelt
  • Trust busting
  • Industrial expansion
  • Massive western migration
  • Early labor movements
  • The final years of the Victorian era

California was marketed nationally as a land of sunshine, health, and opportunity — perfect territory for booming pharmaceutical and wellness companies.
