Exceptional antique French aristocratic household livery coat, circa 1800, associated with the House of Colbert.
This remarkable historical garment is made from vivid red wool cloth and richly decorated with woven geometric trim in red, black and cream. The coat features an elegant long-tailed cut, elaborate decorative bands across the sleeves, matching cuffs and pocket flaps, and multiple tasselled tabs across the front.
One of the most important features is the set of gilt metal buttons bearing a crowned heraldic shield associated with the Colbert family. These buttons strongly reinforce the aristocratic household origin of the garment and make the coat particularly interesting for collectors of French history, heraldry and antique costume.
The interior shows traditional period construction with a pale textile lining and extensive hand-finished details. The overall construction, materials and decorative treatment are consistent with a formal household livery dating from around the turn of the 19th century.
