Antique Double Saddlebag (Khorjin/Heybe) — Turkish or Kurdish Tribal, Hand-Woven Wool, ca. Late 19th–Early 20th Century
A superb example of tribal flat-woven and pile-woven textile art, this antique double saddlebag (known as khorjin in Persian or heybe in Turkish) displays the exceptional craftsmanship of Eastern Anatolian or Northwestern Iranian Kurdish weavers. The combination of knotted pile face panels with flat-woven kilim center and back sections in a single piece is a hallmark of authentic tribal production.
Construction:Both decorated face panels are pile-woven (hand-knotted) with vivid geometric diamond medallion designs on a deep madder red ground. The center bridge and back panels are flat-woven kilim in bold multi-stripe patterns. The bags are fully intact and functional, with original closure cords present.
Design: Interlocking diamond medallions with hooked borders, surrounded by geometric subsidiary motifs — a design vocabulary consistent with Eastern Anatolian Turkish (Malatya/Erzurum region) or Kurdish tribal weaving traditions.
Colors: Deep madder red, indigo navy, saffron/amber, ivory, and earthy sage green. Colors are vibrant and consistent with natural/vegetal dye origins. No significant fading.
