Up for sale is a charming antique/vintage decorative metal relief plaque featuring a detailed turn-of-the-century style depiction of a young boy or laborer walking with a pickaxe. This cabinet-sized piece features an elegant allegorical design deeply rooted in European or American folk art. The scene displays a young worker in classical attire—traditional loose-fitting shirt, breeches, and stockings—standing adjacent to a rustic floral shrub.
- Scale & Display: Measuring approximately 5.5" x 4", it is perfectly scaled for gallery walls, narrow study accents, or small display stands. It retains its two original small loop hanging rings affixed to the top corners for easy display.
- Material & Technique: Crafted from a lightweight stamped tin base metal, the front surface was treated with a dark chemical wash/copper-toned plating to emulate the look of heavy cast bronze or brass.
- Age & Style: While the exact year of manufacture is unknown due to the lack of maker marks, the subject matter, costume, and design heavily reflect the Victorian / Edwardian era (circa 1900–1950) when industrial and labor-themed domestic plaques were highly popular.
- Condition Notes: The plaque shows beautiful, authentic antique character. The front features a crisp, beautifully preserved relief scene with an excellent aged patina. The reverse side remains untreated and displays significant, honest oxidation, scaling, and green verdigris consistent with high copper-content chemical glazes and genuine age. The metal plate is flat with no deep structural bends or cracks.
An excellent addition to any collection of vintage metalware, early labor collectibles, or rustic folk home decor! Please review all photos carefully to assess the authentic wear and patina. Thank you for looking!
