Antique Improved Order of Red Men (IORM) membership badge marked “HONAYAWAS Tribe No. 372,” associated with Bloomsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. A 1908 directory records this chapter under the spelling “Honayawus.”Founded in Baltimore in 1834, the Improved Order of Red Men became part of America’s flourishing fraternal-lodge culture. The organization drew inspiration from Revolutionary-era patriotic societies and claimed a connection to the Sons of Liberty and Boston Tea Party. Its local chapters were called “tribes,” and its ceremonies and regalia incorporated Native American imagery and terminology. The order emphasized patriotism, fellowship, and charitable work under the motto “Freedom, Friendship, Charity.”This ornate three-section badge features a gold-tone oval chapter nameplate, connecting chains, a red-lettered MEMBER bar, and a decorative circular pendant containing a color portrait of a man wearing a feather headdress.Both the upper pinback section and lower pendant are stamped “THE M. C. LILLEY & CO., COLUMBUS, O.” This company name was used from 1882–1925. Badge is dated 1908.Antique condition with surface scratches, tarnish, finish wear, and age-related toning to the inserts.
