Hand-carved wooden war club features natural burl wood with several root protrusions showcasing the texture and strength of the wood and crafted from a single piece of hardwood. This unique piece features a highly textured, natural root burl head with branch offshoots giving it a formidable, spiked appearance. The front of the shaft has intricate hand carved designs while the back has a carved fern pattern. Root clubs were primarily crafted by the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet and Mi\'kmaq nations from Maine and eastern Canada. Root clubs were harvested from the subterranean root burls known for their interlocked, non-splitting grain which provided the structural density needed for hunting and fighting. Historically, the clubs represented authority and warrior prestige.
