This item is an antique Moroccan Koumya, a traditional curved dagger. Koumyas historically served as a sidearm and as a status symbol for the Berbers. Typical of North African craftsmanship, this Koumya has both repousse and intricate design. It is made from a combination of brass and coin silver. The geometric star motifs and the scrolling design are indicators of a regional artistic style that dates to the late 19th or very early 20th century. The quality of the engraving on this Koumya dagger and scabbard is exquisitely detailed and the metal finishes are very well preserved. This item also has its original suspension rings! The steel blade is in need of some rust removal. This special piece comes from the estate of a former Middle Eastern diplomat.
