Condition
Antique pre-owned condition with age-related wear throughout. Wooden exterior shows scratches, scuffs, finish wear, small nicks and other surface wear consistent with age and original commercial use. Brass-tone hardware shows age/patina. Interior Mandeville & King Co. advertising graphics remain bright and attractive with some age-related wear, including a horizontal line/crack through the lower portion of the blue advertising panel. Original “Bill of Original Contents” paper label remains inside and shows age, discoloration and edge wear. Box is empty and no key is included. Please review all photos closely as they are an important part of the condition Mandeville & King Co. wooden flower seed advertising and store display box from Rochester, New York, dating to the early 1900s.
These boxes were used by retailers to display and sell packets of flower seeds and are sometimes referred to by collectors as “silent salesman” advertising displays.
The hinged wooden box features ornate brass-tone hardware and a striking blue and cream interior advertising panel reading:
“Mandeville & King Co.
Superior Flower Seeds
Rochester, N.Y.”
A particularly desirable surviving feature is the original paper “Bill of Original Contents” label mounted inside the lid. It lists:
Flower Seeds — $9.00
Box — .75
Total Amount — $9.75
Box measures approximately 12 1/2” long and approximately 3 1/4” high. Please see measurement photos for additional dimensions.
Original seed packets are no longer present.
A wonderful piece of early American gardening, seed company and agricultural advertising history with strong display appeal for collectors of antique advertising, general stores, gardening memorabilia and country store items.
