ANTIQUE JAPANESE NATURAL INDIGO-DYED COTTON FABRIC PANEL - 2-HABA AIZOME MUJI (TAISHO TO SHOWA ERA)
An authentic Japanese antique plain cotton fabric panel (無地木綿 / Muji Momen), naturally indigo-dyed (本藍染め / Hon-Aizome) and dating from the Taisho to early Showa era (early to mid-20th century). Consisting of two standard-width cloth panels joined down the center (二巾 / 2-haba), this substantial piece measures approximately 62 cm x 152 cm (24.4 in x 59.8 in).
[COLOR & TEXTURE CHARACTERISTICS]- Natural Indigo Fading (Aizome / 藍染め): Dyed using traditional plant-based indigo, the fabric features a deep, soulful blue tone with organic variations in shade (Abrash) developed over decades of gentle use, light exposure, and washing.- Plain Weave Cotton (Muji / 無地): Unpatterned, tightly woven vintage cotton yarn that reflects the tactile quality of historical Japanese textile craft.- Soft & Supple Hand-Feel: Decades of age give this fabric an extraordinarily soft, comfortable texture that modern industrial manufacturing cannot replicate.
[HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE & THE SPIRIT OF AIZOME]In traditional rural Japan, indigo-dyed cotton was essential for daily life. Known historically to Western visitors as "Japan Blue," natural indigo was cherished not only for its rich aesthetic appeal but also for its functional virtues—strengthening cotton threads, repelling insects, and offering natural antibacterial properties.
2-panel joined fabrics like this were widely used for household bedding, room divider curtains (Noren), or wrapping cloths (Furoshiki). When worn through, such pieces were repurposed by domestic craftspeople as foundational backing material for Sashiko embroidery and Boro patchwork.
[SPECIFICATIONS]- Era: Taisho to Showa Era (Early to Mid-20th Century, Japan)- Material: 100% Vintage Cotton- Structure: 2-Panel Joined (二巾 / 2-haba)- Color: Natural Indigo Blue (Hon-Aizome)- Dimensions: approx. 62 cm x 152 cm (24.4 in x 59.8 in)- Weight: approx. 150 grams (0.33 lbs)
[CONDITION]Offered in genuine antique condition as pictured. Displays authentic signs of historic use: soft indigo color fading, a distinct distressed worn hole on one side (as highlighted in close-up photos), light surface wear, minor edge fraying, and storage fold lines. The material remains soft, pliable, and strong enough for creative reuse. Retains a subtle vintage textile aroma. Please review all high-resolution photos carefully.
[RECOMMENDED USES]Given its generous 2-panel width, this piece is ideal for:- Traditional Sashiko embroidery or Boro visible mending projects.- Creating custom table runners, door curtains (Noren), or wall hanging displays.- Crafting antique-style garments, tote bags, cushion covers, and patchwork art.
