Relics (Latin: reliquiae) are remains that are venerated within certain religions. The veneration of relics plays an important role, particularly in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christianity, as well as in Hinduism and Buddhism. Within some branches of Islam, relic veneration plays a certain role, but within other branches, it is rejected as idolatry.
Relics in ChristianityWithin Roman Catholicism, relics refer to the remains of the bodies of saints or objects that have been in contact with the body of Jesus, Mary, or another saint.
Such objects are classified into three categories, in order of importance:
First-degree relics: bodies or body parts of deceased saints;Second-degree relics: objects that were in contact with Christ or a saint during their lifetime (clothing, footwear, utensils, etc.); Third-degree relics: objects that have been in contact with Christ or a saint after their death (the Holy Lance, shrouds, earth from a grave, etc.).
VenerationThe veneration of relics can be traced back to the early Christian custom of celebrating the liturgy above or near the grave of martyrs, for example in the catacombs in Rome. When churches were later built on or near the graves of martyrs, the custom arose of placing relics in the altar. This custom still exists in Catholic churches. If an altar is desecrated, the relic is sent back to the bishop.[source?] In the past, miraculous powers were attributed to the relics of saints. They were believed to be able to act as a 'channel' of divine power (the deceased saints therefore do not perform these miracles themselves).
Relics of a saint are often offered for veneration on the saint's feast day. In some places, the faithful come forward after Mass to kiss a reliquary containing the relic.[1] In Lier (Saint Gummarus) and Bruges (Holy Blood), processions take place, accompanied by extensive festivities. In other places, such as Aachen, Kornelimünster, Susteren, Maastricht and Huy, seven-yearly pilgrimages to the shrine are organized, often based on centuries-old traditions. During the rest of the year, the relics are kept in the sacristy or in a secure storage place, sometimes under the care of a brotherhood dedicated to the devotion to this saint.
