Two antique Hebrew Pentateuch volumes printed in Sulzbach, Germany, in the 1830s.
- Vol. 4, Sefer Bamidbar (Numbers): printed 1835
- Vol. 5, Sefer Devarim (Deuteronomy): printed 1837
Each volume includes the Hebrew text with Targum Onkelos, Rashi, the Biur (commentary), and the Targum Ashkenazi (German translation printed in Hebrew letters), credited on the title page to Moses Mendelssohn. Printed by S. Arnstein und Söhne, Sulzbach.
Provenance: Both title pages carry ink stamps from Chizuk Amuno Congregation, Baltimore, Maryland and Beth Hamidrash Association, an interesting piece of American Jewish history.
Binding: Later leather-spined bindings with gilt lines and titles, volume numbers stamped on the spines. Vol. 4 is brown and Vol. 5 is black, with dark cloth-covered boards.
Condition (used, antique):
- Spine wear and scuffing; light cracking to the leather on Vol. 4
- Corner wear on Vol. 5
- Age toning, foxing and some staining on the title pages
- Library ink stamps as noted above
- Text is clear and legible, and the volumes open well
Please review all photos carefully. This is a pair, not a complete set. Ships carefully packed.
