The knife features attractive stag/antler handle scales with an unengraved metal shield and an extensive assortment of folding blades and specialized implements.
The blades are marked I*XL / GEORGE WOSTENHOLM / SHEFFIELD, as shown clearly in the close-up photographs.
This is a specialized horseman/sportsman-style multi-tool rather than a conventional pocketknife. The knife incorporates multiple cutting and utility implements, including a saw, corkscrew, awl/punch-type implement, long curved horseman's/equestrian-type implement, additional specialty tools, and removable accessories. Please use the detailed photographs to identify the exact configuration and contents.
Importantly, the knife retains its original removable toothpick and original removable tweezers. The toothpick is present as photographed. The tweezers are broken/incomplete, and their condition is clearly shown in the photographs. Both original pieces are included with the knife.
Mechanical Condition
The mechanical condition is quite good considering the knife's age.
The folding blades/tools tested exhibit strong, positive snap at the midpoint/half-stop and when fully opened. There is no noticeable blade wobble/play when fully opened.
The knife opens and closes as expected during inspection. Because this is an antique collectible, it is being sold primarily as a collectible rather than as a modern working tool.
Cosmetic Condition
This knife remains in antique, used condition and shows substantial evidence of age and use.
The steel components exhibit original patina, oxidation, staining, scratches, discoloration and areas of surface pitting. These surfaces have deliberately not been aggressively cleaned or polished for sale.
The stag/antler scales have attractive aged color and texture but show considerable wear. There are chips, losses and damaged areas to the stag, particularly around the ends of the handles, all of which are shown in the detailed photographs.
The original removable toothpick is present.
The original removable tweezers are present but broken/incomplete.
There may be additional age-related wear or imperfections consistent with an antique knife of this type. Please inspect every photograph closely.
Collector Information
George Wostenholm's I*XL marked Sheffield knives are well known among collectors of antique English and Sheffield cutlery. This elaborate multi-implement configuration, stag handles and specialized horseman/sportsman implements make this a particularly interesting example for a collector of Wostenholm, Sheffield cutlery, antique horseman's knives, sportsman's knives or early multi-tools.
No attempt has been made to assign an exact pattern number or manufacture date where one cannot be conclusively established from the knife itself.
Approximate closed length: 3.5 inches.
Included: Knife, original removable toothpick, and original broken/incomplete tweezers shown in the photographs.
Please examine all photographs carefully. The photographs are an important part of the description and show the actual knife, its markings, implements, handle damage, oxidation/pitting, original toothpick and broken original tweezers.
Sold as an antique collectible in the exact condition shown.
