A wonderful lot ofhistoric French-style silk needlework, perfect for historical textilecollectors, researchers, or custom framing projects. This lot includes twodistinct textile pieces across two eras of craftsmanship.
Item 1: Two late 18th-century European detachedpanels, likely unpicked from the covers of an original 1700s letter case,wallet, or folding pocketbook. Hand-embroidered in fine silk threads on a creamsilk ground. The top panel features beautiful ribbon and chenille work with agreen and gold central initial monogram (TS?) framed by a hand-stitched laurelwreath and climbing rose branches. The bottom panel displays a central wreathwith initials (PL?) flanked by vibrant flowers and trailing vines. The silkground is stable with no severe dry rot or crumbling. The top and bottom edgesshow loose threads where the panels were carefully unpicked from their originalstructural boards long ago. There’s soiling commensurate with age.Measures 5 1/2” by 4 1/2”.
Item 2: Ahigh-quality vintage historical letter or handkerchief case, first quarter ofthe 20th century, reviving the needlework style of the 1790s. Beautifullyhand-embroidered in a tight chain stitch on champagne silk. The flat-restingflap shows two lovebirds below a streaming banner reading: "PUISSIONSNOUS LES IMITER" ("May we imitate them"). The edges arebordered by a continuous loop braid trim. The exterior silk and embroidery are entirelyintact, and lightly aged/soiled. There is clean splitting to the innersalmon-pink silk lining along the interior fold seam on the front and back,which reveals the white industrial mesh canvas stiffener underneath. Each panelmeasures 6 1/2” by 4”. Both reverses feature smaller, hand-embroidered and ribbonwork floral sprays surrounded by delicate hand-couched cord borders.
