This exceptional and rare antique French silver and niello vesta case dating to circa 1880 is made by a well-known French silversmith A. Dubois. The front of the vesta case is decorated with a pair of birds sitting on the branch surrounded by foliage and flowers, and the back with a single bird amongst flowering branches reminds us of the Aesthetic movement of a 19th-century Japonisme style in France. The hinged cover opens to reveal a silver interior with French hallmarks and a maker\'s mark (A. Dubois). Silver and Niello\'s work creates a beautiful contrast in colour.
