This refined Belle Époque figural lamp features a beautifully cast patinated bronze putto (cherub) standing atop a symbolic sculpted head, representing the triumph of light or innocence over shadow or drama. The figure holds a flower-form sconce with gilt accents and is mounted on a richly detailed ormolu base over a faux rouge marble plinth.
The lamp features a striking hand-blown iridescent glass tulip shade with pulled feather decoration in shades of green, yellow, and cream, creating a soft floral effect that enhances the botanical form of the bronze sconce. The shade is likely contemporary to the lamp or an early 20th-century Art Nouveau replacement, perfectly echoing the organic elegance of the period.
This lamp appears to have been later converted from an original signed figural bronze sculpture by G. de Kerwiguen, a common and tasteful practice in the early 20th century that enhanced the decorative utility of fine bronzes. The adaptation is seamless and stable, with the original aesthetic beautifully preserved
The piece is signed “G. de Kerwiguen”, a French decorative sculptor active in the late 19th to early 20th century, likely working with high-end Parisian foundries. A circular foundry mark is also impressed near the signature, consistent with known seals from French workshops like Susse Frères or Val d’Osne.
