Antique European Lace Collar with Attached Sleeve Extensions, Early 20th Century

A formal detachable lace collar with sleeve extensions, in a fine European needle or bobbin lace, built from three sections: a front bib, a back yoke, and two long sleeve panels designed to drape down the arms over a dress or blouse. The front bib centers on a floral medallion motif with symmetrical vine and flower patterning worked throughout, over a fine mesh net ground with hand-applied cord outlining (cordonnet).

Item Details

  • Type: detachable lace collar with sleeve extensions
  • Closure: designed to button or hook at the back of the neck
  • Neckline: scalloped opening, sits close to the neck

Measurements

  • Front center panel: 7" long x 7" wide
  • Shoulder to shoulder (back): 9" wide
  • Back depth: 3" long x 8" wide
  • Sleeve extensions: 15" long x 2" wide, each

Era & Attribution
The lace's construction and pattern style are consistent with early 20th century (roughly 1900s–1920s) European work, with a fine dotted fill in places suggestive of point de gaze needle lace technique; this identification is a stylistic assessment rather than a confirmed maker or origin, since there's no label or documented provenance. Origin is likely French or Belgian based on the lace style, though also not confirmed. Detachable collars with full sleeve extensions, rather than a plain collar alone, are a less common configuration than the simpler detachable collar, which suggests this was a higher-end accessory piece, though its exact original use — trousseau, formal wardrobe, or otherwise — can't be established from the piece itself.

Condition
The lace retains excellent structural integrity, with minimal breaks and all sections intact and complete. The color is a natural ecru/ivory patina consistent with age, with some further age-appropriate discoloration typical of vintage lace. Ready to display or wear.

Styling
Well suited to textile and lace collectors, museum or archival display, Edwardian and WWI-era costume and historical reenactment, bridal styling, theatrical costume work, and vintage photography.
