📝 Item Description
Title: Antique Mid-19th Century Double Portrait Ambrotype - Matched Victorian Couple in 1/9 Plate Leather Case (c. 1855-1860)
Description:
Up for sale is an authentic, cohesive matched pair of original 19th-century Victorian ambrotype portraits housed in their original dual-aperture folding case.
This exceptional piece features an anonymous gentleman and lady displaying distinct hairstyles and clothing styles strictly indicative of the late 1850s.
• Left Portrait: A dapper gentleman with iconic late-1850s voluminous hair sweeping over his ears. He is dressed in a dark frock coat, high-button waistcoat, shirt, and loosely tied dark cravat.
• Right Portrait: A stoic Victorian woman with her hair cleanly parted down the center and pulled tightly back over her ears. She wears a high-necked dark dress accented by a light-colored collar insert.
• The Case: A genuine wood-frame case wrapped in dark embossed leatherette featuring a decorative arabesque floral medallion stamped on both covers. Includes its original tiny brass wire hook-and-eye safety clasp. Both images are beautifully preserved beneath their original ornate, gleaming gilt-brass mats and protective glass.
Dimensions:
• Image Plate Size: 1/9 Plate (Approximately 2.75" x 2.25")
• Case Size (Closed): Approximately 3.0" x 2.5"
⚠️ CRITICAL CONDITION NOTES (Please Read Closely):
This is an authentic antique item over 160 years old and is sold in honest vintage condition.
• The Binding: The original center binding/spine hinge is currently holding both halves together like a book, but the binding is very fragile. It must be handled with extreme care to prevent splitting.
• The Images: The portraits display some internal cloudiness, minor dust spots, and perimeter flaking behind the glass, which is entirely normal for early collodion glass processes as backings age.
• The Exterior: The leatherette case exhibits scuffing, edge shelf wear, and spine deterioration expected for its age. The original wire clasp is intact. Glass panes are unbroken.
Sold strictly as-is
