Up for sale is a beautiful, complete two-piece Chinese porcelain seal paste box, traditionally used on a scholar’s desk to hold the red cinnabar ink for stamping seals.
Design & Artistry:
The lid features a charming, hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue (Qinghua) scene depicting a classical figure/scholar seated outdoors beneath a stylized tree. The lower bowl continues the landscape motif with fluid, rapid brushwork showcasing mountains, clouds, or rolling water.
Condition & Characteristics:
* Complete Set: Includes both the original matching lid and base (rarely found together).
* Base Markings: The base features traditional empty double concentric blue rings, a classic convention of Chinese folk/provincial market wares (minyao).
* Authentic Character: The inner unglazed rims retain historical orange-red cinnabar seal paste residue from its original lifetime of use—a wonderful visual testament to its age and provenance. The foot ring shows organic kiln grit and minor iron spots typical of period wood-fired provincial kilns.
