Vintage Hop Chung Weihaiwei pewter-encased ceramic tea set.
A rare and striking find for collectors of Asian art and vintage export ware. This is an authentic early 20th-century (circa 1900-1930s) 2-piece individual Chinese tea set crafted by the renowned Hor Chung workshop in the British leased territory of Weihaiwei.
The set includes a small-format individual teapot with its original matching lid and a handleless tea bowl (cup). Both pieces feature a vivid, highly polished cobalt blue glazed stoneware/porcelain body overlaid with intricate, hand-chased openwork pewter.
The metal armor depicts a detailed Imperial Dragon flying through scrolling clouds, while the side of the tea bowl integrates the traditional Chinese "Double Happiness" (囍) character.
The underside of the pewter on the teapot is stamped with the circular "HOR CHUNG WEI HAI WEI TRADE MARK" around the original maker's seal.
