Carl Deffner founded his metalware factory in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, during the nineteenth century. The company produced a wide array of household metal goods, transitioning into highly stylized decorative items as the new century approached. These pieces were crafted using a mix of traditional hand-hammering and modern industrial stamping methods.
Craftsmen and households across Europe used these functional and decorative items in dining rooms and parlors for daily service and display. They were placed on tables and sideboards to hold flowers, food, or lighting fixtures in middle-class homes. Production of these specific decorative metal goods gradually declined as shifting aesthetic tastes and twentieth-century industrial changes favored simpler, minimalist designs.
