This is much better described as abusiness archivethan simply a lot of old paperwork. The group contains a substantial assortment of original correspondence, invoices, receipts, statements, billheads, telegrams and other commercial documents, many sent to, from, or associated withHenry Hall\'s Sons Co. and Hall Rod Works.
The Henry Hall fishing-line business traces its origins to before the Civil War. Henry Hall established manufacturing operations at Highland Mills, New York, and by the late 19th century the company was producing fishing line along with rods, reels and other tackle. The firm operated under names including Henry Hall & Sons, Henry Hall\'s Sons Co. and later Hall Line Corporation. Significantly, the University of Notre Dame Rare Books & Special Collections maintains its own archival collection of Henry Hall company business records, illustrating the historical interest in surviving material from this company.
The photographs show a fascinating cross-section of American business history, predominantly dating from theearly 1900s through the 1920s. Companies and material visible in the archive include:
- Henry Hall\'s Sons Co. / Hall Rod Works – Highland Mills, New York
- H. J. Frost & Co. / Jack Frost Fishing Tackle
- Shapleigh Hardware Company
- Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Co.
- New York & Boston Dyewood Co.
- Charles Williams & Co. paper merchants
- Western Union telegram
- Monroe National Bank document/check
- Eastern Fuel Company
- Belding Bros. & Co.
- various hardware, manufacturing, textile, legal and commercial firms
- handwritten correspondence, signed receipts and accounting documents
Several pieces retain attractive period letterheads, company logos, stamps, signatures, handwritten notations and original business content. Some relate directly to fishing tackle, fishing line, hardware and Hall\'s manufacturing operations.
Condition:Genuine working business documents that were saved rather than created as collectibles. Expect normal age toning, folds, edge wear, small tears, stains, filing holes, pencil/ink notations and other signs of use. Condition varies considerably from piece to piece. Please examine the photographs carefully; they are an important part of the description.
Lot is being sold together as found.I have not attempted to separate the archive by company or correspondence chain. The photographs show the scope of the material included.
