Crafted circa 1880â1900, this rare set is made of genuine black Bristol glassâfrequently treasured by collectors as "black amethyst glass." While looking entirely opaque black under normal room lighting, holding these pieces up to direct sunlight or a strong flashlight reveals a beautiful, deep, translucent violet-purple hue.
The set includes:
- Two (2) Matching Lidded Urns / Baluster Vases: Measure approximately 8.5 inches tall to the top of the rim.
- One (1) Central Footed Compote / Centerpiece Bowl: Measures approximately 4.25 inches tall with a top diameter just under 4.5 inches.
ARTISAN CRAFTSMANSHIP:
Each piece features hand-blown glass characteristics, complete with rough, ground-down pontil marks visible on the undersides. The bases also bear handwritten antique tracking inventory numbers ("36." and "63.") common to estate or sale house provenance. The exteriors are charmingly hand-painted with an enamel band of cream-colored floral dogwood blossoms, soft green leaves, and delicate gold accent trim rings.
CONDITION REPORT:
This set is in beautiful antique condition. There are absolutely NO chips, NO cracks, and NO flea bites on the rims, lids, or pedestals. The enamel paint is remarkably well-preserved for its age, showing only light, honest thinning to some floral elements and the gold borders.
